Designed by Charles Wood, Jr., the same person who designed Disneyland in Southern California, Fountain Hills is a beautiful community east of Scottsdale Mountain Summit and south of the McDowell Mountains. Established in 1970, this master planned community that spans nearly 13,000-acres was originally a cattle ranch and part of the largest land and cattle holdings in Arizona, until it was purchased in the 1960s.
Fountain Hills attracts thousands of visitors annually all eager to witness the impressive fountain from which this community is named. As one of the tallest man-made fountains in the world, it shoots 7,000 gallons of water per minute straight into the sky and can reach upwards of 560 feet in height. Residents of this town are extremely proud of the area’s natural beauty, incredible views and variety of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, boating and golf. Art is also an integral element of the town’s heritage and the original eight fountains spotted along the Avenue of Fountains were just the beginning of a stunning public art collection that now features nearly 70 pieces of public artwork displayed throughout the downtown area and surrounding public buildings. Those content to take strolls through the town are invited to participate in the guided Art Walk tour or feel free to create their own.
The nearby Eagle Mountain Golf Club is home to one of Arizona’s premier and picturesque public golf courses. In fact, it was recently rated by Golf World as one of the Top 50 Public Courses in the country. Designed by Scott Miller, this course takes golfers through shaded box canyons to come face to face with the majestic mountain peaks. With four sets of tees to accommodate a variety of skill levels, playing yardage on this course ranges from 5,065 to 6,755 yards.
Surrounded by the McDowell Mountain Regional Park to the north, the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community to the south, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation to the east and the McDowell Mountains and Scottsdale to the west, Fountains Hills boasts beautiful views no matter which way you look. With its mountainous environment, this neighborhood is quite hilly, with an elevation of 1,520 feet at the fountain and 3,000 feet on Golden Eagle Boulevard. It’s also 500 feet above Phoenix, which provides an excellent perspective for night viewing of the sparkling city lights.
Given the Town’s awesome beauty and rich culture, it’s no wonder that Fountain Hills was named the best place to live in the Valley of the Sun by Phoenix Magazine in 2006, and was cited as “a welcome oasis on the outskirts of a metropolis.” The Town protects the incredible desert landscape and limits how much building may occur, which helps regulate population growth. With a current population of 26,000, the complete build-out population between 30,000 and 35,000 means the neighborhood will be kept at an intimate level – just one of many reasons why Fountain Hills is such a desirable place to live.
