Arcadia is a lovely community in the Phoenix area located adjacent to the western border of Downtown Scottsdale, with its borders generally considered to be 44th Street and 68th Street and Camelback Road to the Arizona Crosscut Canal (Thomas Road). In its earlier days between the 1920s and 1950s, Arcadia was occupied by citrus farmers, but was eventually suburbanized with ranch homes. Thanks to the irrigation of the Arcadia Water Company, this land appeared to most as an oasis in the desert, and in the 1920’s the land was sold in 5-acre parcels for just 35 cents per acre. Today, orange, lemon and grapefruit trees can still stand tall in the yards of many local homes as a nod to the history of the neighborhood.
Due to excellent irrigation, taller trees and abundant plant life create lush neighborhoods, uncommon in much of the Phoenix area, and also help lower local temperatures by as much as 5 to 10 degrees compared to surrounding communities. Arcadia is also characterized by immaculate homes featuring distinct architecture situated on large lots, which tend to command relatively high property values. And with spectacular sunsets over the majestic Camelback Mountain providing further evidence that this is an extraordinary area, residents and visitors alike need little convincing as to why the book Where to Live in Phoenix notes, “Arcadia casts a spell like no other neighborhood in the Valley of the Sun.”
With world class shopping, dining, resorts and big city amenities just minutes away, optimal location is just one more reason to love Arcadia. To the east is Downtown Scottsdale where there is always something to do from fabulous shopping and great nightlife to trendy art galleries and talented musical acts. Sports enthusiasts can head south to Tempe to take in a game of college hoops or football, or hop on the 202 to Downtown Phoenix to take in the NBA’s Phoenix Suns or MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks. While Biltmore Fashion Park to the west offers even more shopping and dining opportunities. And for those seeking a luxurious resort experience, a number of the Valley’s finest golf and spa resorts can be found just north of Arcadia in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley.
Arcadia offers residents a small community feel and homes with desirable character, yet the convenience of big city amenities. A community that celebrates all things local, residents stay in the know of local news, events, restaurant reviews and more through the neighborhood newspaper – The Arcadia News.
